Blog post 11: Why do we have to pretend

By Peter, Wiimali resident

The other day there was some sort of event in the town – you know, the sort where we are all supposed to go and pretend we all get along and love each other’s cultures?

Well I didn’t go… I just couldn’t. I left going into town to another day. I had business to do and didn’t have time for messing about with that rot.

On other days when I go into town and I’m walking down the street most of them don’t even look you in the face and say g’day.

Walk straight past they do without acknowledging you and how important your family’s been to the town over the years. And some of the clothes they wear … not really any good for our climate you know and some of the clothes are just weird, especially the women. I wouldn’t want Joyce dressing like that. Then again I don’t think she would want to anyways. Don’t see anything wrong with what we wear.

Then there’s all that food and all those sloppy sauces … I bet most of it’s not beef. I hear stories about dogs and there’s no way I’m going to eat a dog! That’s just not right. Would rather eat a roo.

Couldn’t we spend all that town money on something more important like sports grounds?

Anyways it’s people like us that keep the town alive. We’re the ones doing the work and making money. We’re not sitting around on government benefits or community goodwill. Without us doing the hard yards the town wouldn’t be here for them.
